There are new standards in place for Festivals, AA, and Provincial Championships.      *There is no longer an age 14 category at Festivals, back to 13 and under swimmers only.

Channel Cats Compete at AA & Age Group Provincial Championships

The Orillia Channel Cats Swim Club recently competed in Provincial Summer Festivals Short Course held at the Markham Pan Am Centre as well as Ontario Age Group Long Course Provincial Championships and the Provincial AA Meet held at the Toronto Pan Am Centre.        “We had the highest number of Provincial qualifiers this season, we sent eight swimmers to Provincial Festivals and eight to the AA Meet and Age Group Provincials.” Says Head Coach Meredith Thompson-Edwards.

Ontario Festival Results:    Caleb Near (14) won Gold in 100 freestyle (56.01) and 200 Individual Medley (2:19.99), Silver in 100 backstroke (1:01.49) and Bronze in 50 freestyle and 200 backstroke (2:16.66).     Near also broke the 13/14 boys 200 Individual Medley club record.    Owen Rosati (14) placed 5th in 100 backstroke and 10th in 50 freestyle.    Blythe Wieclewek (12) placed 4th in 40 freestyle and 5th in 100 freestyle.      Hayley French (12) placed 14th in 100 butterfly and 18th in 200 butterfly.     Flora Haslem (13) raced 400 freestyle placing 20th.   Marit Kershaw (14) raced 200 Individual Medley and Alexandre Rainville (13) was in 50, 100 and 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.    Owen McCool (13) competed in the male relays.

Ontario Age Group Long Course Provincials and AA Meet Results: Caleb Near placed 4th in 100 backstroke, 7th in 200 Individual Medley (2:24.11) breaking the 13/14 boys long course club record and 8th in 200 backstroke (2:21.95) also breaking the 13/14 boys club record.      Hughie Edwards (16) placed 16th in 100 breaststroke, Silver in 200 breaststroke (AA meet) and 6th 400 Individual Medley.    Calum Kershaw (19) set a new club record in the 15 & over boys 200 meter breaststroke (2:36.22).   Owen Rosati (14) also raced and set two personal bests in the 200 Individual Medley and 200 backstroke.      Carly Widmer (17) competed in the AA meet and won Silver in 100 breaststroke, 4th in 200 meter freestyle.    Blythe Wieclawek (12) won Gold in the 50 freestyle (29.23) and also made the Eastern Canadian Championship standard in the event.     Wieclawek set new club records in the 200 freestyle (2:29.00) and 100 backstroke (1:15.35).    Hayley French (12) won bronze in 200 butterfly (2:42.90) setting a new club record, and was 6th in the 100 butterfly (1:12.04) also setting another club record in that event.     Megan Widmer (15) placed 5th in 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle 6th 200 freestyle and 7th 100 freestyle.     “This was one of our most successful Provincials as a team-the swimmers really pushed and raced hard not letting the tough competition affect their performances.”   Says Thompson-Edwards.    “Provincials had Olympic bronze medalist Kylie Masse and Kennedy Goss participating as a prep meet for Worlds later this summer. “   It was a great experience for the swimmers and coaches to watch them race.”       Up next for the Channel Cats is Canadian Junior Championships in Toronto July 26-30.
